Dementia

In the beginning
a blur
then shapes appear.
Fingers grab
hands reach
and hold.
Mouth tastes feel
toes wriggle
feet push kick
knees lift
stand straight
balance
legs run.
Words come
link together and
the network winks.
Hand grasps pen
lines go on
up down
and around
letters and
words spread out
as if forever.
Bike balance
hands hold
feet go round
and know stop.

Years go
links break
gaps appear.
Things and faces
lose shape and place.
Numbers lose punch
bills fly away.
Fingers reach
but cannot use.
The way is missing
the how-to
is gone.
The network blinks.
Words drop
fingers forget
memories fray
gather holes
and lights are gone.
